Reading is an adventure. It takes over days and weeks and leads to foreign thoughts and new worlds. The fact that we all react differently to readings is what makes discussing novels so interesting. That’s why readers come together in book clubs. Because shared reading means double the pleasure. While the digital revolution may have turned our reading habits upside down, the joy of reading in society still remains popular. The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung, together with the book chain Thalia, are inviting you to our new project “Reading Together”. Together with you, the readers, we want to rediscover literature.
The beginning of this cooperation is marked by Leïla Slimani’s novel “Carry the Fire”, which is being released today in the German translation by Amelie Thoma at Luchterhand Literaturverlag. Following “The Country of Others” and “Look How We Dance,” the 1981-born, Paris-based Goncourt Prize-winning author concludes her family trilogy with the story of two sisters searching for freedom.
After the extensive pre-interview with Leïla Slimani, you can find more texts and backgrounds about the life and work of the writer starting this Wednesday in our feuilleton and in the literature newsletter (to subscribe to, visit nl.faz.net/#literatur). Additionally, as part of the book club project “Reading Together,” we invite you to read “Carry the Fire” and discuss it. In Thalia’s digital book circle, you can exchange ideas with other readers. The F.A.S. and F.A.Z. feuilleton editors Julia Encke and Sandra Kegel will also discuss the novel in a podcast. Finally, on March 21st, as part of the Leipzig Book Fair, there will be an event with Leïla Slimani that you can watch live via stream.
